There are 3 main ways to get to Chiang Mai from
Bangkok: plane, bus, and train.
This is arguably the quickest way to getting to Chiang Mai (not counting a transit from your location to the airports). Domestic flights, both low cost and full service flights, depart from both Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) and Don Mueang Airport (DMK), which are currently reached by the Bangkok Mass Rapid Transit. Flights depart from the airports in Bangkok every 2-3 hours, starting from 30 USD (one-way ticket). This price may be cheaper if you make a reservation in advance. Domestic flights are operated by multiple airlines including AirAsia, Nok Air, Thai Smile, Bangkok Airways, Thai Lion Air and Thai Vietjet Air.
Riding a bus to Chiang Mai can take 9 or 9.30 hours for VIP and First Class buses. Most buses to Chiang Mai leave from the Northern Bus Station, also known as Mo Chit Bus Station and arrive at the Arcade Bus Station in Chiang Mai, about 5 kilometres away from the historic area of Chiang Mai. We do recommend you to seek a service from these two bus service companies: Nakhonchaiair and Sombat Tour. Their first class overnight bus cost you 830-850 Baht per trip (26 USD) in return for a declining seat, toilet, personal entertainment, meal, and snack.
This journey takes the longest time, 12-15 hours, riding from Bangkok station (also known as Hua Lamphong) to Chiang Mai station. The tickets can be from 8 USD (third class, hard bench seat and electric fan) to 76 USD (first-class cabin). If this is your choice, we recommend you to take night services leaving Bangkok 18.15 and arrive in Chiang Mai next day around 07.00 or 08.00. Making a reservation in advance is recommended to guarantee your best seat. Please visit the State Railway of Thailand D-Ticket system via this link:

Chiang Mai's iconic and main form of public transport are the converted trucks with two rows of back seats, which accommodate 8-10 people. Locally known as Rod Daeng (red car) or Songthaew (two rows), these trucks pickup and drop off passengers all over the city. Their colours determine their route and direction. As they are shared rides, the fare is quite cheap.
Taking the bus is the cheapest way to travel to/from the airport. Through the R3-Y bus, the travel time from the airport to Anusarn market is 14 mins. plus a 5-min walk to Le Méridien. The R3 bus system runs every 20-30 mins, and the fare from the airport to the Old City is 30 THB. There are also other route services that will allow you to travel around the city of Chiang Mai. Visit the RTC Chiang Mai City Bus for their route map and timetable.
Other options include Tuk Tuks, motorbike taxis, and rented vehicles (bike, scooter, motorbike, car, and minivan). theculturetrip
